A passport is an all-important document for every people when heading abroad as it opens up access to other countries the world over, but which passport is the most powerful one of all? A new index has revealed the rankings for 2019.

It’s not American or British for being most powerful passport, Japan and Singapore have held onto their position as the world's most travel-friendly passports, with South Korea dropping into second place. Last year, the spot was held by South Korea. Japan and Singapore’s passport, according to the Henley Passport Index, with citizens enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 189 destinations across the world.

It's been a three-horse race this year to be named the world's most powerful passport, with all top three contenders in Asia. Singapore and Japan's passports have topped the rankings thanks to both documents offering access to 189 countries each.

South Korea is now rubbing shoulders with Finland and Germany in the second tier, with citizens of all three countries able to access 187 jurisdictions around the world without a prior visa.
In 2019, 27 countries were in the top 10 positions on the index, with 20 of those countries located in Europe, and three in Asia.

Five years ago, the United States and the UK topped the rankings in 2014 -- but both countries have now slipped down to sixth place, the lowest position either has held since 2010. The United States with 116 visa-free countries.

The United Arab Emirates continues its ascent up the rankings, entering the top 20 for the first time in the index's 14-year history. In just five years, the UAE has more than doubled the number of jurisdictions its citizens can enter without a prior visa.

And the worst? At the other end of the scale, Afghanistan is once again at the bottom of the rankings, with its citizens needing a prior visa for all but 25 destinations worldwide.
